Commonly Overlooked Items in Wedding Planning

Imagine this: Sarah and Mark had been dreaming of their wedding day for years. They meticulously planned every detail to reflect their love story and personal style, all while staying within their budget.

As the big day approached, they focused on the attire, the venue, the decorations, the catering—everything that would make their celebration unforgettable. However, what they didn't anticipate was the aftermath: the cleanup. A wave of chaos ensues! Will the finale of their momentous day be spent frantically tidying things up?

The reality is, planning a wedding involves a delicate balance between dreams and practicality. Couples painstakingly weigh their lifelong wedding wishes with the logistics of making it happen on a budget. Through all the excitement of mapping out and creating such a memorable event, it's easy to overlook the “less glamorous” but equally essential aspects of such an occasion—most notably, cleanup!

Cleanup logistics are often an afterthought in wedding planning. It's understandable; who wants to think about trash bags and recycling bins when envisioning the magical moment of saying "I do"? Yet, ensuring proper cleanup arrangements are in place can make a significant difference in how smoothly the day unfolds and how stress-free the aftermath feels.

Whether you're planning a complete DIY wedding on a budget or considering vendors for services, we’ve outlined some important items to consider below.

Trash and Cleanup Logistics

One of the most commonly overlooked aspects of event cleanup is managing trash and its associated logistics. The good news is you can find a lot of helpful information from the venue itself:

  • Do they have trash receptacles and bags?

  • Who manages the trash and changes the bags when they’re full?

  • Does all trash have to be removed from the venue at the end of the night?

  • Do they have dumpsters? Where are they?

  • And, most importantly, are all these disposal services included in your contract?

Covering each of these items ensures you're not left scrambling for cleanup solutions when the festivities wind down.

After-Party Cleanup and Transport

After the dance floor clears and the last guest bids farewell, there's still work to be done.

The details that make a wedding so beautiful—the centerpieces, the linens, the carefully chosen décor—also need a detailed cleaning plan. Having a clear plan in place ensures a smooth transition from celebration to cleanup without disrupting the joy of your wedding day.

Assigning someone to oversee the collection of personal items such as gifts, favors, and any leftover food or beverages ensures that nothing is forgotten in the whirlwind of the day.

Once all is said and done, it’s important to also account for how each detail, decoration, and material will be transported back home.

Transportation Logistics

If your wedding day includes multiple venues or events, transportation logistics play an even bigger role when you and your family/friends have a more hands-on role in setup and coordination.

In this case, it's important to:

  • Arrange for transportation not only for the different groups of the wedding party but also for guests who may need assistance getting from one location to another.

  • Consider options for getting guests safely to hotels or after-party destinations after the reception concludes.

Arranging for transportation allows guests to let loose, drink (responsibly), and have the fun they so deserve!

Backup Plans for Outdoor Weddings

For couples planning an outdoor wedding, having a budget-friendly backup plan is essential. Whether it's securing a tent or having an indoor alternative ready, preparing for unexpected weather ensures that your day remains magical, rain or shine.

Last June we attended a wedding where it rained suddenly but completely lucked out for our own wedding in December. Our special day was nice and clear but it poured for hours the day after. No matter the time of year it is important to have a backup plan!

Post-Wedding Logistics

Once the celebrations come to an end, there are still loose ends to tie up. Countless rented items, such as linens, often need to be returned and vendors need to be properly tipped and paid.

This is another important aspect of wrapping up a large event, and we recommend designating a responsible person to manage these tasks, allowing you and your partner to enjoy your wedding day and honeymoon without worrying about the details left behind.

Don’t Be Overwhelmed

We get it. There’s A LOT to account for when planning a wedding! It’s an exciting time, where dreams are discussed and slowly made into a reality, crescendoing into an amazingly beautiful, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Covering the less exciting logistics of event clean up ensures the positivity, joy, and loving fun continues throughout the day, uninterrupted by chaos. If it seems like too much, don’t worry, we can help!
